Free Games That Don't Drown You in Ads

Free doesn't have to mean an ad every thirty seconds. Some studios build a fair free version and let you enjoy it, and those are the games we hunt for. The trick is knowing where the ads hide before you install.

The worst offenders put an ad between every single action. The good ones show one after a full run, or only when you ask for a bonus. Neon Stackers is a decent example: it nags you once when you lose and that's it. Clockspire goes further and has no ads at all.

When I test a new game I play for at least half an hour with the sound on. If the ad rhythm makes me want to close the app, it fails, no matter how good the core gameplay is. Your patience is worth something.

One practical trick: airplane mode. A lot of ad-supported games can't load their ads offline, so they simply skip them. It's not a moral solution, but it tells you exactly how the game feels without interruptions, and it doubles as a battery saver.
